Introducing, "Backlight"
This is definitely an exciting moment in my creative journey. The final season of the web series I have spent more than a decade working on, in some capacity, is coming to a close. I feel like I mention this every time I talk about having to say goodbye to something (or someone), but the last official day of high school, before exams started, I didn’t carry around my backpack, but rather a box of tissues. I was an emotional wreck, crying all the time. Maybe that’s why I slip out at parties or social gatherings without so much as a goodbye (albeit, except for a quick “thank you for hosting,” to the host, if there is one). Not that I would turn into a bucket of tears leaving a friend’s birthday party, but it’s one of those things I just don’t enjoy doing.
Now, imagine you’ve spent 12 years working on, and creating, this world where your creative mind can literally fulfill any of the dreams you once had, you can share space with people you’ve admired for so long, and you’re genuinely happy to work on this creative endeavor… now choose to walk away from that, not because you don’t like it anymore, or don’t want to do it anymore, but because you did it… your mission has been accomplished, even though you had no idea what that end result would be when you started… but alas, here we are and now I’m walking away to see and ask the bigger question, “what’s next?”
Today I’m dropping the trailer for the final season of Misguided and laying out the plans for our Season 4 rollout. I can’t wait to share these final episodes with you beginning August 14. Then be sure to catch new episodes each Friday. We’re giving a nod to the days of appointment television and Friday cliffhangers, all leading up to our series finale on September 18. Guiding Light fans will recognize the significance of the date, but for those unfamiliar, after 72 years of storytelling, Guiding Light aired its final episode on September 18, 2009. I thought this would be a fantastic way to come full circle and honor the central muse of Misguided, my favorite soap opera of all time, Guiding Light.
Now, if watching Misguided isn’t enough, because I know you’re just as invested in this series as I am, I’m going to start a series within this substack called “Backlight,” where I shine a little extra light and highlight each episode. Giving a little more in-depth look at the story, the filmmaking journey, and what it’s been like along the way. As we lead up to the season premiere on August 14, I’ll be rewatching and reliving those first 16 episodes and writing a little bit about them as well. This is my parting gift to not only those who have championed this series from the beginning, but also a little something for me to hold onto and keep Misguided alive a little while longer, before officially moving on.
The other day someone posted something that found its way to my algorithm: a clip of “Saying Goodbye” from The Muppets Take Manhattan. It seemed fitting for this moment, for this ending…
Saying goodbye, why is it sad? Makes us remember the good times we’ve had. Much more to say, foolish to try, it’s time for saying goodbye.…wanna smile, wanna cry, saying goodbye…
